GOODBYE TO BOYS STATE

By Jeff Sorensen, Editor

It’s been a long week. Many of us are tired and want to go home, while others were just getting started. Can you believe that Boys State 2009 is almost over? Many have gained a lot of information and experiences throughout the week. As all the counselors have stated, “you’ll get out of Boys State what you put in.” This I’ve found is very true. I came into this week without any goals set. My plans were to be involved without being one that was in charge. My whole plan for the week changed dramatically on the first day. After riding a bus for hours from the U.P. it was difficult to be too enthusiastic about the long week ahead. All any of the Yoopers wanted was to go back to sleep. However, we did manage to stay awake. I was already slightly interested in becoming a writer on the Whirligig Newspaper. During city orientation on Monday, I made the impromptu goal of becoming the Editor in Chief of the Whirligig. Being co-editor of this all but ordinary paper, I have gotten a lot out of Boys State. So, the moral of this story is what you’ve heard all this time. I put a lot into my experience here, as one of two editors of the Whirligig, and have gotten so much out of it. At Boys State, you truly do “get what you put in.” So, as the Trolls go to their homes in the various cities below the bridge and the Yoopers load back onto the bus, and head back to ‘da U.P.’ think about it. Did you get a lot out of this week? If not, did you really put much into it?
