At Tuesday’s full citizen assembly, Federalist candidate Jeremy Browning of Jackson was announced as the governor for the year 2008, beating Nationalist nominee William Harning. He stated in his victory speech that he was primarily for the state, not city, nor county.

After the announcement of governor, Jeremy had this to say about his emotions: “Before the announcement, I was content. I know that with the nationalist candidate, Will Harning, we would be in good hands. Also, I had already been elected to the senate, so I had a fallback. Following the declaration, I was humbled. I didn’t feel like sticking my chest out. I know I am among great young men.”

Jeremy Browning has experience in the student level of government. As a freshman, he was involved in his school’s senate and was the president of their concert orchestra. As a sophomore, he was elected to his class presidency. In his junior year, he was the vice president of his class and the president of the symphony orchestra. He also is the lead speaker at his church and is involved in their young life ministries. Before coming to Boys State, he planned to run for an important position, based on the fact that he had an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he followed the plan to “go big or go home.”

He admits that his biggest obstacle was the tedious occupation of listening to each city’s individual issues. He lists education at the top of these issues, as he believes education is the gateway to all good things in life. Students need education, for it leads to good families and is the major stepping stone to success.

Many citizens may be wondering who he will appoint to the Gubernational Cabinet and the Board of Regents. He has decided that his ideal standards would be to have at least one person from each city, regardless of party or position. If Jeremy could change on thing, he would eliminate the detrimental county ties, considering that they lead to the elections of positions based on name and popularity, not a discerning of the issues.

Jeremy particularly enjoyed the Federalist convention, based on the general level of preparation by the candidates, and he highly valued the opportunity to see the differing stances on the issues.

Jeremy’s overall opinion of Boys State is that it is “challenging, often times tiresome, and it takes a lot of mental strength, but it is all worth it and it pays considerable dividends.”

Based upon his confidence, humility, and knowledge about current concerns, I believe that the citizens of Boys State can take pride in their governor for 2008, Jeremy Browning.
