Former Gov. Addresses Boy’s State

Michael Jones, governor elect 2007, presented a personal and informative address to the new citizens of Boys State in the Bennet Center East. Having consumed their first sample of cafeteria food only a short time ago, the curious teenagers listened contentedly to Michael’s speech, and pondered how to apply his advice to the coming week.

Following the conclusion of the General Assembly, Whirligig reporter Isaac Becker was able to gain an audience with Michael, and they discussed his experience in Boys State. Isaac: What campaign strategy did you use to become governor?

Michael: We convinced our entire county to nominate single delegates to the State level of voting. That way there were twice as many votes for our nominees. We were united.

Isaac: What was your experience like with the counselors?

Michael: it was hit-or-miss. The counselors were basically the same age as us, but they had a hard time admitting it. Once we broke the barrier of age creating authority, our relationships grew stronger.

Isaac: Do you have negative thoughts about the counselors?

Michael: I know they are some of the best and brightest. Like they said today, some are going to places like Hillsdale and Northwester— good colleges.

Isaac: What was your favorite thing about Boys State?

Michael: Meeting the guys in my city and making new friends.
