Vanburen To Raise Water Rates

6/15/2008

The incoming Vanburen city council must face the unpopular decision of increasing the resident’s water rates. Many residents attending the last city council meeting voiced great displeasure in this move. “I am on a fixed income and how do you expect me to pay for this. I have to choose food or water if you make this move”, said one senior citizen. The issue at hand is, the city is facing losses due to the increase costs of the water service. The current rate is $1.91 per 1,000 gallons of water. The new rates must cover a projected $300,000 increase to the budget. Some citizens have posted signs in their yards, “No to Water Increase”. The question now is what will the new city council do if elected?
