Monroe Tops List Of Unemployment

The recent unemployment numbers are out and Monroe City is ranked number one in the highest unemployment rate. Over the past three years Monroe has watched as revenues continue to decline and city services continue to suffer. One longtime resident was quoted as saying, “I have lived in Monroe for 70 years and I have watched this city decline severely in the past four years. Never forget this, the way Monroe goes so does Boys State”. The past city officials could not balance the budget causing more problems for the incoming elected officials. With the unemployment rate comes the inevitable increase in health care and homelessness. The city budget has become a “paper tiger”, as one past Mayor put it. If the city cannot turn this around then the state may be forced to step in. One thing is clear not any of the city residents we spoke with wants this to happen. “Receivership is not an option for this grand city. Monroe is the gateway to Boys State”, said one local businessman.
