Madison Teachers Threatening To Strike
6/15/2008
A spokesman for the Madison Teachers Association told the Whirligig, “It is entirely possible that we could see a strike deadline. The teachers of Madison are asking for a fair reasonable contract, nothing more”. The school district has stood firm that the teachers are going to pay more into their medical coverage to offset potential deficits. “We are asking the teachers to take on some of the heavy cost burden to the district. They are paying nothing now and this has to change”, stated the assistant superintendent. The outgoing President of the School Board said, “We are asking the teachers to do nothing more than anyone in the private sector. To pay some health care costs is mandatory in this economic climate”. The Teachers Association told the district that an arbitrator should be scheduled since they have come to an impasse on this issue. In the meantime students may be caught in the middle of this health care battle.
