Are You Really Running For The Position You Want?

As the first activity packed day came to a close here at Boys State and the beginning of city and countywide elections start, many are wondering what position is right for you? Like many of you, I was confused as to why we start the nominating process so soon, just a mere seven hours after we arrive.

I mean, we’re still getting to know our roommates names and now we are expected to pick a position and stand in front of twenty or so strangers and give a speech about a fictional city.

I found that in my city, Washington, there wasn’t a lot of competition for city positions; I’m not sure if this was due to pure shock of determining your Boys State career in a couple hours or just the lack of interest. In the Federalist Party, there was only one candidate for mayor, three candidates for city council, and all of the other positions were left untouched. I found it funny how some Boys’ State members were nominated for positions didn’t even know what they were getting themselves into. This leads me to my overall question: are you really running for the Boys State spot that you want? This is an important issue because you don’t want to be stuck doing something you hate for six days just because no one else from your city wanted to do it. Unfortunately, things move fast in Boys State and your nomination will be due sooner than you think; so make your decisions promptly while keeping in mind that what you pick is what you are, no exceptions. You don’t want these next six days to be filled with something you didn’t really want in the first place.
