Cost of rioting

The riot on the campus of Boys’ State University cost more than just dollars and loss of equipment. There were several thousand injuries and several people killed. The estimated damage to BSU property is valued at 5 million dollars, and personal property damage is at 9 million dollars. Over 1200 people were arrested on the scene and hauled off to jail. There were 2200 injuries, where 300 of those were serious injuries.

As for the deaths, ten citizens were killed in the fighting, and the various police and defense departments that were on the scene killed thirteen others. 63 officers and guardsmen were injured, of those 18 were serious, and five officers were killed by various ways. 405 police officers were on the scene from the various local city police departments and county sheriffs departments.

The Boys’ State Police supplied 40 state troopers and the National Guard brought in support with 300 guardsmen. The total cost of damaged equipment between all departments of police and the National Guard totaled to $860,000. For the deployment of manpower and equipment, the total cost between the National Guard and departments of police totaled to 5.36 million dollars
