Same-sex civil unions were recently passed in Boys’ State. The Senate passed the measure overwhelmingly 10-1 with 5 abstaining votes. It then moved on to the House where it was passed with much support with a vote of 26-2 with 5 abstaining votes. Being signed into law, Representative Kyle Youngblood says this now allows all same-sex couples who have had a civil union to have “the exact same rights as heterosexuals; including the taxes and divorce. It can’t be forced in a church, so you would have to go to the Secretary of State.”
The wording of the bill is as such that heterosexuals are “legally bound”, while same sex couples are unified civilly, but there are “same sex couples.” Governor Roman was quoted as saying, “I am pleased to sign a bill that promotes the equality of all people into law.” With the overwhelming support of the state government, the gay community is making progress in Boys’ State.
