The former Mayor and City Treasurer were found guilty of embezzlement yesterday. They were sentenced in Circuit Court to 3 years in prison. They were also ordered to pay back the money that was taken. The State Police conducted the investigation. “We estimate the losses to be somewhere around 15 million”, said the state auditor. The damage done to the respect of city officials is unpredictable. A group of concerned citizens marched outside the courthouse calling for serious penalties against the two convicted elected officials. “This crime calls for a much more serious sentence then was handed down here today. I think that the judge protected his fellow politicians here”, yelled a citizen.
